The list of qualifiers for 2017 Department of Science and Technology-Science Education Institute – Junior Level Science Scholarship (DOST-SEI JLSS) Examination, which was held last November 2017, was officially released on Sunday, December 31, 2017.

Out of 6, 049 takers, 4,529 passed the 2017 JLSS examination. The takers were third year college students who were enrolled in various Science and Technology courses. Among the passers are MSU-TCTO students, namely; Shermahal L. Hairal, Venissa A. Sualli, Shanjid G. Abduhalim, Mary Rose T. Gandilan, Nur Shafiqah S. Abdul Said, Arkady A. Tahil, Hermalyn T. Asdal, and Crystelle May W. Amores. Shaleeca Myrah V. Sali, who passed the exam is now in MSU Main. The exam was conducted at MSU-TCTO Preparatory High School, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

The JLSS is a scholarship program under Republic Act No. 7687 or the “S&T Scholarship Act of 1994,” R.A. No. 10612 or the “Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013,” and the R.A. No. 2067 or the Merit Scholarship Program.”

Qualifiers of the program shall enjoy two to three years of scholarship benefits, which include tuition subsidy, monthly stipend, book allowance, among others. Merit Scholarship qualifiers shall likewise receive the same benefits except for the pro-rated monthly stipend that is based on the scholar’s socio-economic status.

R.A. No. 10612, on the other hand, supports the execution of the K to 12 law by creating a pool of scholarship-graduates that can competently teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the basic education level.

 

Moreover, scholars under the RA 10612 are expected to teach STEM, ideally in their respective home regions, as their return-service. Meanwhile, graduates of the RA 7687 and Merit Programs are required to work along their fields of specialization in the country equivalent to the length of years they have benefitted from the scholarship program.

 

The JLSS is implemented in support of the overall goal of increasing the number of scientists and engineers that will help boost knowledge creation and economic productivity in the country.
